A PRACTICAL GUIDE

Bone health

Fracture risk and when a DXA scan may help.

The first step may be a risk assessment rather than a bone-density scan.

When does age matter?

UK NICE guidance advises considering fracture-risk assessment for women from 65 and men from 75, or younger when risk factors are present. These are clinical discussion points, not a confirmed Malta invitation programme or automatic entitlement to a scan.

What can mean earlier assessment?

A fracture after a minor injury, repeated falls, long-term steroid treatment, low body weight, early menopause or a parent’s hip fracture are reasons to discuss risk with your GP. Under 50, NICE generally reserves assessment for major risk factors.

What happens next?

A clinician may estimate fracture risk using your history, with a DXA bone-density scan if it would help decide treatment. A risk assessment does not automatically mean you need scanning. Agree any repeat assessment with the team according to your risk and treatment.
