A PRACTICAL GUIDE

Heart & metabolic health

Blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.

Start with your risk profile, not a request for every blood test.

When to discuss it

Use an adult wellbeing appointment to review these risks. Blood pressure deserves particular attention from age 40, or earlier with relevant family history or other risk factors, according to NHS guidance. Malta’s wellbeing service accepts adults from 18; it does not publish a single universal testing timetable in the service charter.

What happens and how often?

Blood pressure uses an arm cuff. Cholesterol and glucose checks use a blood sample when clinically indicated. A clinician may need repeated or home blood-pressure readings before deciding what a high result means. Ask whether fasting is necessary, and agree the repeat interval based on your results and medical history.

Who should raise it earlier?

Tell your GP about close relatives with diabetes, early heart disease or high cholesterol, and about previous high readings. If you have persistent thirst, frequent urination or unexplained weight loss, seek an assessment rather than waiting for a routine check.
